Burberry Tutorial Sections: Burberry Part One ← Burberry Tags 1. Material:The most famous of Burberry patterns are the Nova Check and the Classic Check. Nova Check Classic Check: Note: Burberry utilizes PVC for manufacturing their handbag material, also know as: (Vinyl Coated Canvas). This handbag material is super strong and durable, and to go along with its sturdiness, it is also stain resistant. The material is similar to leather in these respects but the texture is very different. The famous Nova Check material has a cream/tan background with vertical and horizontal black and pink/red stripes. Contemporary Nova Check handbags are trimmed with smooth matte black leather. Some of the older handbags tend to have a more glossy black leather trim. Some of the most recent Nova Check features are thick, diagonal stripes. However, they will form a perfect 90 degree angle where they intersect (for more on geometric counterfeit signatures go here). Other newer styles are featuring white leather trim. Classic Check material has a cream/tan background with vertical and horizontal black and pink/red stripes and an Equestrian Knight symbol, where the pink and red stripes intersect. This trim will be either a matte brown leather, or a glossy black leather. 2. The Pattern: Another important aspect in authenticating a Burberry is the pattern (for more on counterfeit pattern detection go here, here and here). The pattern should consist of perfectly horizontal and vertical stripes. If the stripes are crooked, chances are it is not authentic. Sometimes the curvature of the bag does not allow for this but it is fairly obvious when this is the case. The stripes should be sharp and crisp. There should be no evidence of color bleeding into the other colors, or the cream background of the handbag. The stripes should intersect with other stripes, almost forming perfect lines. However, complete perfection is not always possible, and if the line is slighlty off a tad, that alone does not convict the handbag of being fake. The level of allowable pattern shift varies, but it will never be too dramatic. The more you study Burberry patterns, the better you will become at knowing what is ok, and what is too shifted. The same rules apply for the extras. The pattern should also be symmetrical/centered on the bag or accessory. Below is an image of a fake burberry pattern. Here is an example of a dramatic pattern shift. [Note] The red vertical stripe on the flap does not align with the red stripe below it when the flap is closed (pictured below). Also note the three blue stripes on the left are aligned. Meaning if you were to shift the flap to align the red stripe, the blue stripes would no longer be aligned. If every stripe is not aligned on the pattern, then this is a good sign that the Burberry bag is a fake. Also, the label has a frame around it which no authentic Burberry will have. 3. The label: The color of the tag should match the color of the lining. The stitching should be uniform and the print should be straight and centered. The back of the tag will say MADE IN ITALY with a code underneath. Below are images of authentic Burberry labels: Note: Always check the Burberry FONT: The "U" should have a thicker left line (side) that the right. The "R's" in Burberry should always have the same right leg, one that arcs high and to the right, then arcs down and to the left (almost like a squiggle). The font is better illustrated below in the Burberry scarf label section. [12/13/09] Burberry font: The Burberry font will have certain distinct characteristics. Below is a correct Burberry font:
Scarf labels: Burberry labels on scarfs should have a woven texture, not be a cheap fabric cut out. Below is an image of an authentic Burberry scarf label: Note: Notice the woven authentic label texture compared to the cheaper fake fabric. Also, notice the correct font, compared to the incorrect font (second image down). Below is an image of a fake Burberry label: Note: Notice the cheaper fabric. Also, the "B", and "U", and "R's" in Burberry are noticeably incorrect fonts, with the "E" (too wide) and "Y" (too thick) being more subtle but still noticeably incorrect. The folks that counterfeited this label attempted the squiggle "R", but seemed to only arc the lower left part of the leg. It also appears they tried to mimic the varying curves and widths of the Burberry font. However, their attempt made the letters look blotchy in places. Also, the plastic tag on the string is an incorrect shape. Wallet stamps: Stamped logo impressions/embossed logo impressions should conform to the same quality of the signature Burberry font. Below is an image of a Burberry logo inside a wallet: Note: The tiny details of the signature Burberry font are still noticable, even on the mini "Established" stamp. The details are fairly clear, with no bleeding or blotchy letters. Below is an image of the Burberry logo etched onto wallet snap: 4. The Zipper: The zipper should say "Burberry" on both sides. 5. The Seams: The seams should be neat, uniform and perfectly straight. The leather trim should be even with the edge of the bag. Below are images of real Burberry seams: Note: The seams on authentic Burberry handbags falls in line with the universal principles . Below is an image of an authentic Burberry seam on leather accents. Note: Here is an example of an allowable pattern shift. Notice it does not line up perfectly, but it is in no way overly dramatic. The red stripe is aligned from the top section to the bottom section. Notice the difference between the authentic red stripe alignment and the fake alignment (pictured above in the pattern section).
