We have outlined some helpful rule of thumb points about Dooney and Bourke that a shopper can work with, offering some insulation from the fake handbags floating around the viral marketplace. Logo thread: On the exterior of the handbag there should be a Dooney and Bourke label. Check the thread color of the exterior label. The thread color of the label should be the same color that is utilized on the entire handbag. Always inspect this detail. There should be uniformity with the label thread and the handbag thread. Some fakes, may get this detail incorrect, and have a different color on the label than on the handbag itself. Or it may be more subtle, the contrast of the label and thread color may not be so dramatic. Instead, the colors may be off a shade, but still part of the same color family. So always examine the thread color with a fair level of scrutiny. [For an example of non-uniform stitch color used on a non-Dooney authentic bag go here.] Red, white and blue fabric: Dooney and Burke generally uses a label made of red white and blue fabric, located inside the handbag. Also, check the back of the label. On the back of the label should be the serial number. However, some contemporary Dooney and Burke handbags do not have this feature. USA or China?: There are some contemporary lines that are in fact made in China. If the Dooney and Bourke handbag is one that was manufactured in China, there generally is a small tag located inside the bag that will say this. So made in China does not, as far as newer Dooney lines go, necessarily mean that the handbag is fake. Below is an image of an authentic Dooney and Bourke label: This is a "made in the USA" Dooney and Bourke handbag. Notice this script is located under the logo. Below is another authentic Dooney and Bourke label: Notice this label does not have the "made in the USA" script under the logo. That is because this is one of the contemporary Dooney and Bourke handbags made in China. The tiny tag that is seen next to the label referances this. Below is an image of the serial number located on the back of the label: British tan leather: Take a look at the handbag trim on the outside of the handbag. Many authentic Dooney bags utilize what is known as British tan leather on their trims. Often times, fake handbags will use a cheaper trim, and this quality can go unnoticed at first glance, but under further inspection, lower quality trim should become more apparent. Handbag trim is one of the areas that counterfeiters will always try to cut some corners. This is also true of all the heavily counterfeited handbag brands. All weather leather: Dooney and Boorke uses what is known as all weather leather, (AWL). Hardware: Many of the fake Dooney and Bourke handbags sitting in shady ebay listings will have a phony brass colored hardware. Authentic Dooney uses real brass for their handbag metal accents, hardware etc, and one of the most common signs of a counterfeit is slight hints of silver in the metal pieces. This is generally evidence of a cheaper metal, and another example of where the counterfeiter will cut corners. The metal accents on any designer handbag regardless of the brand will always be high quality, and their fake counterparts will generally be a cheaper metal. And this is something that can be uncovered with a some detailed scrutiny of the metal accents. Below is an image of real Dooney and Bourke brass: Notice the "solid brass" etching in the piece. Piping and stitching: The piping on a Dooney bag refers to the rounded leather around the edges of the handbag. And the stitching is obviously the seam lines. Authentic Dooney will have a high quality piping feature, as well as uniform and neat stitch lines. The stitch line is a universal tell for all designer handbags, and Dooney and Bourke is no exception. Always inspect the stitch lines for irregular or sloppy seams. It is ok for a stitch to be slightly out of place on a tiny percentage of the handbag seam areas, but if evidence of sloppy stitching starts to form a pattern, then that should raise a red flag. Checking stitching seams can be somewhat of an art, as every bag will have its own varying degree of non-perfection, however, it is up to the buyer to determine how much seam irregularity is too much. This becomes much easier the more you study the handbag seam lines of top designer bags. Below is an image of an authentic leather label: Note: Notice how detailed the label is. The stitch lines are also clean, strait, and a consistant size. There is no glaring irregularities or flaws within the stitch line framing pattern. Also, notice the doubled up stitch lines on the lower half of the label. They are doubled up in the exact center of the leather label, perfectly symmetrical with the rest of the stitch frame. Fake handbags may have doubled up stitch lines in random areas on the label, creating an asymmetric seam pattern. Note: The stitch lines have an equal amount of stitches on all four sides. The left and right sides have nine stitches each. The top and bottom have 20 stitches each. Some variance with SpI [stitches per inch] is allowed at times.
