Zippers: First off, if the zipper is blank it is a counterfeit Marc Jacobs. All Marc Jacobs handbags have either RIRI or Lampo. Marc Jacobs uses riri zippers on their classic bags. Riri zippers are the most common on the Marc Jacobs handbag lines. REAL RiRi zippers should have a rounded head, and should not come to a "point.” Some counterfeiters have fake Riri or Lampo zippers, but there are usually specific, distinguishable qualities between the real and fake Riri and Lampo zippers. Some Riri points of reference:
• The i's on the Riri zipper do not have a curved bottom edge, they should look like: \ . If you see a regular shaped i, it is most likely a knock off Marc Jacobs handbag.
• If you look at the top of the zipper head, you can see how it is an entirely curved (rounded) shape, and does not come to a point above the word RIRI.

On the bottom of an authentic Riri zipper, there should always be a number, signifying the exact size of the zipper.
• The larger Riri zipper is RIRI M8.
• The Riri zippers for the small inner pockets are M4.

• The riri on the zipper is found on the backside (the part that faces the inside of the bag).
• All riri zippers (the top zipper, front pocket & inner pocket), should be stamped on both sides of the silver end piece which stays attached to the bag and hooks into the zipper pull. A total of five riri stamps.
• Fake Marc Jacobs handbags may use "YKK" zippers and riri markings that do not have the \ edge for the i.
Lampo info: The Lampo zipper is used on the East/West bags. There are several Marc Jacobs bags that have lampo zippers. Some of the older bags do use LAMPO. Also used is the lampo zipper with the lightening bolt underneath the word "lampo." [pic needed].

Zipper pull etchings: Zippers will always be engraved with the Marc Jacobs logo. Marc Jacobs zippers are very distinctive. The Marc Jacobs logo will always start with Marc on the thickest part of the zipper pull.

Tags and Serial Numbers: Older Marc Jacobs purses do not always have embossed serial numbers. [cite needed]. Marc Jacobs serial numbers are found in some of the inner zipped pocket in the corner seam. They are black or white with black letters with the seasons, and model numbers.

Letter and two numbers [season and year], followed by three or four numbers [model/style].
• F06 xxx or xxxx: Fall of 2006, model/style
• F07 xxx or xxxx : Fall of 2007, model/style
• F08 xxx or xxxx: Fall of 2008, model/style
• F09 xxx or xxxx: Fall of 2009, model/style

Note: Not all bags have serial numbers. The older ones typically do not nor do many of the signature Marc Jacobs bags like the MP, Stella, Sophia.

Note: Marc Jacobs items never have metal or leather tag hanging off it. Most knock off Marc Jacobs (and many other counterfeit designer handbags) use fake tags that dangle off the bag. Some may be metal and say “Marc Jacobs,” others are phony leather tags that say “Genuine leather.” Also, the interior labels on the bags are never leather. They are metal. [pic needed].


• Logo stamps: Marc Jacobs handbags should be stamped “Made in Italy“, on the metal logo plate (label), under the Marc Jacobs, or it could be found in the inner zippered pocket sewn inside. Some Marc Jacobs handbags have the Made in Italy stamped on the leather of the bag near the lip.
• Name plates:The older signature style authentic Marc Jacobs handbags have metal nameplates (labels, logo plates) either in gold or silver. The newer bags have Marc Jacobs embossed on the leather.
• Hang tags: The tag that is attached to the bag which describes the style, price, name and color should always be attached by a black string. The string is held together by a white plastic Marc Jacobs rectangular piece. Fake Marc Jacobs handbags have been seen with tags hanging on a white string (Same for counterfeit Versace handbags, and others).

Some info on authentic Marc Jacobs Stella handbags:
• Fake Marc Jacobs Stella purses may have a square appearance (the edges should be slightly curved so that when its flat the has a bottom a round appearance).
• Like many counterfeit handbags, a fake Marc Jacobs Stella may have missing or incorrect colored top-stitching.
• The fake Stella purse may have shoulder straps that are too thick and large. Authentic Marc Jacobs Stella bags should have shoulder straps approx. 1.5” wide.

• An authentic MJ Stella should have the zipper in the front and there should be space between the ends of the front pocket and the ends of the bag, not all the way from side to side.
• Authentic Stella bags do not have leather tabs at the end of the top zipper. The zipper should be flat and lie completely within the top "lip" of the bag.
• The shoulder straps on an authentic Marc Jacobs Stella handbag should have squared ends.
