It is important to note that these vintage items can be very expensive, and there is a high demand for them, which creates the perfect storm for counterfeiting. A market for fake Louis Vuitton luggage is also in heavy demand, possibly due to the infrequent use of the luggage as opposed to an everyday bag. Meaning that people are more willing to purchase a fake piece of luggage than a handbag. Also, it is important to note that when dealing with vintage LV Luggage many of the contemporary rules do not apply. Many vintage pieces do not have a date code system, the monogram patterns do not always maintain the contemporary symmetry (breaking some of the "rules") and the vintage heat stamp fonts can vary in detail from the contemporary fonts. Not to mention some of these early vintage luggage pieces can go for tens of thousands of dollars, so you really need to know what you are looking at. We recommend buying vintage pieces from highly reputable sellers and it is always better to get an authentication in person in these cases. Because of the many deviations in the vintage luggage, navigating your purchase solely on pictures can be extremely difficult. That said, we included a few images of some vintage luggage features you will encounter. Below is a vintage trunk and a vintage-inspired purse: 
 Note: Louis Vuitton started his company in
1854, and the closer the luggage is dated to 1854, the more likely that contemporary
Louis Vuitton rules will not hold. The 19th century luggage pieces were also heavily
counterfeited, and it was these imposter lines that inspired the LV Toile canvas
(introduced at the end of the 19th century) to combat the counterfeit market.
A): The luggage in image A is a trunk dating back to 1915. These trunks are commonly seen with many travel stickers covering the outside of the trunk. Trunks like this are rare, and can fetch thousands of dollars. This specific trunk was valued at over 20k. B): The pochette purse in image B was part of a vintage-inspired line put out by Louis Vuitton modeled after their turn of the century travel trunks. The purse's monogram pattern has special graphics representing the famous travel stickers (as seen on the original in image (A). Below are two vintage luggage stickers: 
Note: These stickers are also found on many vintage
luggage pieces, generally worn out or torn (as in image B), or missing completely. Often times
it proves difficult to decipher the authenticity of these stickers as there can often be many variance details.
And determining whether the sticker is displaying a variance detail or an error detail without
having specific knowledge of vintage Louis Vuitton luggage is not an easy task. In the two images
above, there are 3 noticeable differences in the sticker:
A): In image (A) the O does not appear to be a circle, and the width of the L and the width of the O appear to be the same distance. Also the number 3 stamped in blue ink has a flat top. And there is a dash between the NICE and 2 [NICE - 2]. B): In image (B) we see a more contemporary looking LO font with the O being a circle, and the width of the O being about 2x the width of the L. And conflicting with image (A) we see the NICE and 2 separated by a "." [NICE.2]. Also the number 3 in stamped in blue ink has a curved top. F/N: Image (A) appears suspicious due to the lack of wear and tear of the sticker and the bold and crisp blue serial number. Note: This is an example of a logo made by the
French Co. under special license in the USA. This type of label was common on larger items and especially their
luggage. (Smaller French Co. items would have what is known as a tyvek tag which was ultra thin
and not much more durable than notebook paper. Because of this, many of these tyvek tags were either
damaged or in many cases, completely torn off). Therefore it is common to encounter smaller French co.
vintage pieces with no tag at all. In these cases you should always rely on a vintage Louis Vuitton
expert for authentication.
F/N: This French Co. label is nicely centered within the leather backing and the text is centered within the white label backing. Also, the framing stitches are even on all sides of the leather backing as well as having a near perfect SpI count. † Concerning [French Co.] hardware, some vintage FC luggage pieces utilized C&C zipper pulls along with Talon and Eclair. Therefore, Vintage French Co. Louis Vuitton zipper pulls did not display the LV logo. †† Also note the color of the leather backing (indicated by the yellow circle [image C]), is slighly darker than the contemporary (vachetta leather) coloring. Different than the contemporary untreated Louis Vuitton leather, the vintage French Co. leather was coated with a protective treatment. These coated treatments can vary slightly in shade (darker/ligher/more orange). ebay L.V.
